Rapidly increasing focus on energy security puts North America’s role as a supplier of secure, sustainable energy to the world at an “inflection point,” Enbridge President and CEO Al Monaco told the Scotiabank CAPP Energy Symposium in Calgary today.

“Security of supply is elevated as an issue, and while I don’t think that will change the focus on addressing climate change, it drives emphasis on energy independence,” said Mr. Monaco, a featured speaker at the annual conference for investors.

The long-anticipated new rule for corporate climate change disclosures in registrations and certain periodic reports (such as 10-K filings) has been issued by the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission. The 500+ page draft is now in the required 60-day public comment period, after which the SEC will consider the comments received and move toward the commissioners’ approval of the Final Rule before year-end 2022.

On March 23, Whirlpool Corp. celebrated the groundbreaking of a 340 Megawatt wind farm in Callahan County, Texas. This Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) is a collaboration with Clearway Energy Group and Deere & Company, parent company of John Deere. Named “Mesquite Sky,” the completion and launch of this project is an important part of Whirlpool Corp.’s ongoing sustainability practices, adding a new sustainable source of power to the electrical grid while helping to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.

The group of chemical compounds known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) has been around since the 1940s, used in both consumer and industrial materials such as non-stick cooking surfaces, waterproof fabrics, and fire extinguishing foams. PFAS are sometimes called “forever chemicals” due to their potential to persist in nature for thousands of years.
