John Ertl believes he shares some of the characteristics that made Michael Weiner one of the great labor leaders of his time. 

“Its empathy is what it really boils down to,” Ertl said. “Being able to see one self and see the larger picture and understand the importance of fighting for something that’s worthwhile.”

One of five recipients of the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies, Ertl, like Weiner, is driven by compassion for working people and a passion for advocating for their rights.

Michael Weiner was known for his unending dedication to his family and employees’ workplace rights. It is that dedication that Joseph Landry, a recipient of the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies, hopes to replicate. 

“Michael’s concern for all workers and respect for the principles of collective bargaining are ideals that we share,” Landry said. “Michael’s kind demeanor and dedication to giving his all to the members are qualities to which I aspire.”

Like the man in whose honor the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies was founded, Akasha Perez has a burning passion to support people who join together to represent themselves in the workplace.

“There is an African Proverb that says: ‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,’” Perez said recently. “This quote puts into words a principle that Michael Weiner embodied throughout his career: the power of collective action. I too believe that the best way to create change is through the empowerment of others.”

Besides his family, former MLBPA Executive Director Michael Weiner was most passionate about employees’ workplace rights.

The employees he represented first as a union staff lawyer then general counsel and finally executive director happened to be professional baseball players, but Weiner felt strongly about all workers’ having a voice in the workplace.

Hunger exists in every community in our nation, from urban cities, throughout the suburbs, and across rural America. In fact, one out of every six Americans goes hungry each day, and 16 million of those at risk are children.

Sodexo Foundation created the Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarships to reward students who are driving awareness and mobilizing young people to eliminate hunger across the country. Through this scholarship, Sodexo Foundation is proud to invest in the power of youth making a positive impact.

In November 2013, former MLBPA Executive Director, Michael Weiner, lost a courageous battle against brain cancer at the age of 51. Michael dedicated his life to the caring of his family first and foremost, and to supporting workers’ rights. In honor of Michael, Major League baseball players created the Michael Weiner Scholarship for Labor Studies to encourage the pursuit of a graduate-level degree in labor studies.
