When it comes to Sanofi’s first North America organization-wide volunteer initiative, employees have been all over the map this October – and making a difference in the best sense. For example, in Tucson, Sanofi R&D employees made “blood soup,” a tool used by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to educate patients about the composition of blood and leukemic cells. In Gainesville, Ga., a Merial team walked large dogs at the Hall County Humane Society and spread mulch in three dog runs. North of the border, a Genzyme Toronto, Canada, team assembled “fun” kits for children with hemophilia or other inherited bleeding disorders, and back in Cambridge, Mass., Genzyme, Global Oncology, Sanofi Pasteur and Sanofi R&D employees painted murals to brighten hospital walls.
All North American Sanofi employees were invited to participate, including those from Pharmaceuticals, R&D, Industrial Operations, Global Oncology, Genzyme, Merial and Sanofi Pasteur. The project focuses on connecting with patients, or in the case of our Merial colleagues, animals, through volunteering.
At latest count, close to 1,800 employees have participated in 92 different projects, including gardening, cleaning animal cages, and volunteering directly with patients, serving lunch, playing games, and making crafts. For field employees, or those who couldn’t participate at an organized company-sponsored project, there were opportunities to complete a virtual project or take up to a day off in October for patient-centric volunteering activities on their own or in teams. While most of the volunteering is over, some employees are still finishing their projects.
With her colleagues, Mary Jahada, a training coordinator/document coordinator at Sanofi Pasteur’s Swiftwater site, assembled a table and then decorated and laminated its top for Sanofi Volunteer Week. “Thank you for the opportunity to do something to help others,” she said. “So many times people want to do something to help others, but they don’t know what or how. It was a great project!”
