In Germany, one in every six companies now generates its own electricity. 16 percent of all German companies produced their own power last year, according to the German Chamber of Commerce, up from about 10 percent a year earlier. 23 percent more companies are considering joining this trend. Companies as large as Dow Chemical, with a plant that consumes one percent of the entire country’s electricity, and as small as rural, family-owned businesses, are investing in their own power-generation infrastructure.
Renewable energy has been certified as a compelling market by Goldman Sachs. The bank is investing $40 billion in the renewable energy sector, in several large equity investments. Among them is $1.5 billion in Dong Energy, a Danish offshore wind energy developer, and $500 million in SolarCity, the biggest U.S. installer.
Honda’s plant in Russells Point, Ohio, will start operations of two wind turbines, making it the first major automotive manufacturing facility in the United States to get part of the power it needs from on-site wind turbines. The plant will reduce its emissions, thanks to the clean 10,000-megawatt hours (MWH) per year the turbines will produce, as studies of the location and wind speeds predict.
In the renewable energy sector, solar and wind power have received the most attention, for good reasons. But activity is on the rise in another resource area, geothermal energy. The global market for geothermal power is growing rapidly, according to a recent report from the Geothermal Energy Association. The report identifies over 700 projects moving forward in 70 countries, with 11,766 megawatts of new capacity in the early stages of development or under construction. By the end of this year, the global geothermal market is expected to operate 12,000 megawatts of capacity online.

On April 8, 2013, Enbridge announced that it had partnered with EDF EN Canada Inc. to invest about $0.6 billion to acquire a 50 per cent interest in the 300-megawatt (MW) Blackspring Ridge Wind Project near Lethbridge, Alberta.
The project, which will be the biggest wind project in Western Canada when operational, represents the largest-ever investment in wind energy in Alberta.
Promoters and detractors of wind power have one point of agreement - both see the transmission lines that carry wind energy as inefficient and very expensive to build. If wind power is going to fulfill its potential as the natural, pristine and infinitely renewable energy source that it could be, this obstacle will have to be overcome.
General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) said that it would supply 43 turbines to Fina Enerji Holding AS for wind projects in Turkey.
The wind projects will generate 97 megawatts of power which will be able to light up about 27,000 homes in Turkey. GE will supply the Kizilcaterzi wind farm, the Karadere park, the Sadilli project and the Salman venture in the nation’s west, according to a GE statement.
Turkey has plans to generate 20,000 megawatts of power via wind energy by 2013 from its current capacity of 1,800 MW now.
