Bottled water has been getting a lot of bad rap and for good reason. The production of bottled water is a very energy intensive process and it involves huge amounts of plastic. The water that you paid so much money for because 'it is bottled from fresh mountain springs that flows through pristine forests where wildflowers bloom and wee birdies sing' is in most cases,  just purified drinking water. Project Outreach is the global CSR initiative at Cognizant "to make a tangible difference worldwide in the field of education". Cognizant does this through volunteer efforts of their employees as well as financial and administrative support of the company. At Cognizant India almost 8000 employees or 10% of the workforce are active participants in this project. The main focus is education and the focus is on English and Computer science to help under-privileged children.

Hindustan Unilever (HUL) is India's largest FMCG company. It is also one of the biggest companies within India and owns 35 brands. It's CSR activities are admirable with rural initiatives, women's empowerment as well as health and hygiene education in its portfolio. Anglo-Dutch giant Unilever Limited owns 52% shares in HUL and in the past has been accused of being one of the biggest buyers of palm oil which is responsible for mass deforestation in Indonesia. This oil was being used primarily in their Dove line of beauty products and right now on their website they claim that "15% of  global purchases of palm oil from sustainable sources" - just to put this in perspective, Dove sales account for over  2.5 billion euro a year in over 80 countries.

Hyundai Motors has been awarded with the ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Award' last week. The company was selected as the ‘Best Commercial and Industrial Institution’ for the year 2009-10. This Award is one of the most pretigious awards initiated by the state government of Tamil Nadu in 2008 in a bid to appreciate and recognize CSR.
