Modern Day Slavery: Is Your Company Doing Enough?
Forced labor, Code of Conduct, Anti-Corruption. These are all terms that all companies must address as they develop their commitments to ethical sourcing. This is easier said than done. Complex supply chains, undocumented labor practices, and bribery hidden deep below the surface make it very hard to identify problems within a company's labor force and supply chain.
Last year the UK Modern Day Slavery Act passed, which stated that UK based companies with revenue in excess of £36 million have to publish an annual Anti-Slavery Statement. This statement describes the company’s efforts to eliminate any presence of slavery or human trafficking within their business or supply chains. According to out-law.com, the Anti-Slavery statement must be published on the homepage of the company’s website, with a link to their individual anti-slavery statement. We ask ourselves though, is a website statement enough?
Addressing Modern Day Slavery is a continuous process. A company must be dedicated to stay on top of emerging regulations. They should also utilize new tools and resources that help eliminate forced labor and encourage a strong ethical sourcing program.
