If I had to pick one word to describe our economy today it would be “anxious”. Consumers are anxious about jobs, their homes, and their futures. Corporations are anxious about the prospects for economic growth, governments are anxious about debt, and investors are anxious about everything. Where does all of this anxiety come from? There are plenty of reasons all around us to worry it seems, but at the end of the day the anxiety comes from within. We feel anxiety when we feel that we lack control, buffeted by big changes swirling around us like the roller coaster stock market ride. One way to get back in control and relieve your economic anxiety is by starting a business of your own solving challenges like energy efficiency with an eco consulting business.

The need for control is basic. It is the reason is why back seat drivers are so nervous (because they’re not behind the wheel), and why we think everyone else is a much worse driver than we are. When we feel anxious in the midst of external forces like the news we see every day, our instinct is to get back in control of our lives and our world.    Taking control of our professional lives means setting a course toward new fields like sustainability that are moving quickly forward even as old ones stay stuck in low gear or move in reverse. Rather than waiting for the phone to ring or that email to finally hit our in-box, it’s time to create our own opportunity.   Sustainability is a bigger opportunity than ever today because it is good for the environment as well as the finances of businesses and homes. Money is tight, and just about everyone is eager to save. By getting efficient to save energy, water, and other resources, businesses and homes can save significant money that goes right to their bottom line.    Eco Consultants trained by GoEco Certified help homes and businesses to reduce waste, save money, and create healthier spaces to work and live. GoEco Certified based in Newport Beach, CA offers regular courses helping those looking for a new direction with all the tools they need to start an Eco Consultant business. Going green is not a luxury today but a necessity for those who want to thrive in our changing world. Most of us know that energy efficiency is a good idea but we don’t want to devote our lives to it. Working with a Certified Eco Consultant makes it easy.   The Eco Consultant training courses from GoEco Certified take 4-6 weeks, and are offered either live over the internet, or recorded to watch according to your own schedule. The training covers a broad range of sustainability startup related topics, as well as business basics that certified eco consultants need to make money as well as making a difference with their own green startup business.                                          What other options are there? Other than getting into action, another response to anxiety is to hunker down, get low, and wait for the danger to pass, like the rabbit that freezes when he sees you coming. You can only stay frozen for so long though. We are years into our current economic slowdown, with no sign of it passing any time soon. This is not just a time of economic slowing, but of change. We aren’t going back to the place where we were before and we stay hunkered down waiting for the world of 2006 to return we could be hunkered down for a very long time. Getting into action in a new direction will prove in the long run to be a better way to take control, release anxiety, and come out on top.   Glenn Croston is the author of “75 Green Businesses” and “Starting Green”, and the founder of Starting Up Green, helping businesses to start green and grow greener with communications and consulting. He can be contacted at glenn.croston@startingupgreen.com.
