Prove Your Impact
As we've been witnessing in the debates on Ruchira's and Jeff's blogs, companies and consumers need to defend what counts as CSR and why. One way for companies to do this is to publicise and prove their impact.
This is a difficult thing to do. It would be difficult for any individual to even to begin to demonstrate his/her positive or negative social and environmental impact. It is a hundred times harder for a complex multinational organisation.
But I recently ran across one innovative attempt to do this. Microsoft's Local Impact Map allows the viewer to visually move across the earth and learn about the hundreds of Microsoft initiatives and their local impact. I think it is a great start. But what would make it much better would be to allow interested activists and consumers to comment on the initiatives and ask questions. (ie, "Hannah Montana Bananna, is that organic? Is that really CSR?")
