(3BL Media/Justmeans) – The global population is estimated to grow to 10 billion by 2050. This will lead to a dramatic increase in demand for energy for food manufacture and distribution, as well as water for food production. The interdependence between food, water and energy is already becoming evident around the world, and climate change is bound to accentuate the trade-off between these resources.

Looking at the critical need to develop sustainable energy sources to meet future demands for food, Smithfield Foods has launched Smithfield Renewables. This is a unique platform aimed at unifying and accelerating the company’s carbon reduction and renewable energy efforts including its initiative to reduce GHG emissions by 25 percent by 2025.

Smithfield announced this industry-leading platform at the 2017 COMMIT!Forum – an annual conference for corporate responsibility and sustainability practitioners to network and share best practices. (COMMIT!Forum is now being operated by CRB, a division of 3BL Media.)

The first Senior Director of Smithfield Renewables, Kraig Westerbeek, will lead and oversee the company’s GHG reduction efforts. An advisory committee led by Westerbeek will evaluate projects and help direct a company-wide strategy for renewable energy projects across both farms and facilities. At facilities, this includes refrigeration, boiler and other equipment upgrades. On farms, this includes projects that convert manure into useful products from fertilizer to renewable energy sources. Smithfield Renewables will further develop and build upon these best-in-industry projects.

Westerbeek said that Smithfield Renewables will ensure that the company continues to lead in the area of sustainability by further sharpening its focus on programs that help reduce its carbon footprint and recycle energy more efficiently. Kenneth M. Sullivan, president and CEO of Smithfield Foods, said that the company is known for producing good food responsibly and its bold environmental commitments.

With the launch of Smithfield Renewables, the company is now better positioned to achieve its sustainability goals and continue setting pioneering environmental programs.
