In May, Sands China Academy hosted a graduation ceremony for the 111 Macao university students who completed Sands China’s Integrated Resort Internship Program. Sands China celebrated the students’ achievements and three graduates were presented with an “Impressive Performance Award” with a limited-edition souvenir by their department heads as a token of recognition for their exceptional performance.
Since its launch in 2014, MakerClub has established eight after-school clubs that introduce young people to coding, creative thinking and emerging technologies. Here, director Declan Cassidy reveals his aim to grow that number to 50 across the UK in 2017 – and tells how Barclays is supporting his team’s ambitious plans to develop the ‘inventors of tomorrow’.
“We’re giving young people the tools to reshape the world around them,” says Declan Cassidy. “We want to create the next generation of creative thinkers.”

Girls Power Tech (GPT) was an amazing experience this year. Through our sites around the world and unwavering support of our global executive sponsors, Kelly Kramer & Ruba Borno, a global team worked together to inspire the next generation of innovators, taking science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to the next level.
This year’s Girls Power Tech featured 90 Cisco offices in 50 countries across the world hosting nearly 6,000 students, 1,689 volunteers, and more than 15,000 mentoring hours! The impact continues to grow.
Environmentalist Liezl Maritz explains why she works at Namdeb and offers advice for women going into mining…
I started working at Namdeb in 2012 as a job attachment. In 2013, I began in a developmental position as an Environmental Officer and was permanently employed as a Senior Environmental Officer for Exploration and Strategic Projects in 2014. I moved over as a Senior Environmental Officer to Namdeb’s biggest operational mine, Southern Coastal Mines, in 2016 where I am still based.
Educators and policy-makers know that personal technology and broadband access are game-changers when it comes to improving outcomes for students – but far too many of the schools they attend lack the resources to provide them.
But for students who face significant challenges in their home lives, access to technology inside the classroom can help bridge the digital divide.
Cisco's passion for STEM education is highlighted by the company's efforts around Corporate Social Responsibility. In particular, Cisco invites young women from around the world into its offices each year to celebrate Girls Power Tech—an initiative to encourage girls to explore the fields of STEM in academia and career.
In late 2015, we reassessed our priority sustainability issues based on Lockheed Martin’s evolving business portfolio and highly dynamic environment. Beginning in 2016, we focus on five core sustainability issues made up of 23 factors. Our sustainability factors have two tiers of priorities: Tier 1 performance factors where we seek to accelerate progress by setting targets for 2017 and 2020; and Tier 2 factors that we will advance through continued management and disclosure, without setting new SMP goals.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics, known collectively as STEM, are essential for inventions that we bring to life. It’s easy to imagine that technology will always get better, faster and cheaper – but without disruptors, scientists and engineers, our culture of creative innovation would not exist. We must lead the next generation of great thinkers and inventors by showing them the possibilities that lay before them in areas such as robotics, connected cars, IoT and 5G. Our STEM education efforts are helping to do just that and more.
