Two New Sustainable Transportation Case Studies Released

September 16, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Leonardo Academy has released two new case studies highlighting the benefits of replacing diesel-fueled trucks with trucks that run on compressed natural gas (CNG). These case studies list real-world reductions in pollutants that will be achieved by removing older diesel trucks from America’s roadways.

Diesel engines are a major source of pollution. Speci¬fically, they emit particulate matter (PM), also known as soot; nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to the production of ground-level ozone, or smog; carbon monoxide (CO), which is toxic to humans and animals; and carbon dioxide (CO2), a potent greenhouse gas. These pollutants contribute to poor air quality in many areas of the country and can cause serious health problems, especially for children, the elderly, and the chronically ill. Replacing older diesel trucks—those that emit the greatest concentrations of pollutants—with cleaner-burning CNG-fueled trucks can drastically improve air quality while saving petroleum, a dwindling natural resource.

The two new case studies illustrate Leonardo Academy’s role in removing 17 diesel freight trucks and 4 diesel refuse haulers from the roads.  Leonardo Academy President Michael Arny explained, “These case studies will demonstrate to the public and new potential stakeholders that there are indeed measurable, long term benefits for voluntary programs that accelerate emission reductions and provide more immediate air quality benefits.”
