Retailers, Platforms Lead From Front To Drive Sustainable Consumption: Davos

The world’s biggest retail companies and e-commerce platforms are leveraging their global networks to deploy responsible consumption strategies, audiences heard on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

“As it relates to sustainable and responsible consumption, we are either a big part of the problem or a big part of the solution,” Alibaba Group President Mike Evans noted during a panel discussion.

Alibaba's Tmall Pilots Carbon Labeling to Drive Sustainable Consumption

Alibaba Group’s B2C e-commerce platform Tmall has launched eco-friendly product labels to help consumers check the impact of their purchases on the environment and make sustainable choices. 

The platform started labeling electric goods this month and will gradually add other shopping categories. On the product display page, a label shows the carbon emissions buyers could save by using an energy-efficient device versus a regular appliance.  

Cainiao Taps Rooftop Solar Panels to Power Bonded Warehouses


Alibaba Group’s logistics arm Cainiao Network has started to use energy generated by rooftop solar panels installed on its bonded warehouses in China to power the operations within.

The two warehouses, located in Hangzhou and Ningbo in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, are the first to adopt renewable energy sources within the bonded zones in China, the platform said in a statement on Thursday.

Alibaba Cloud is on track to meet carbon reduction targets as it upgrades server-storing data centers around the world, according to a scientist on the project.

The cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group aims to have its global data centers running entirely on clean energy by 2030, starting with upgrades to five of its hyper-scale data centers in China.
