I watched Sky News’ Year in Review last night. The week between Christmas and New Years is always a time of reflection for me, I tend not to be working at full tilt, and this means lots of fresh air and lots of thinking. What did I get done? What was I happy with? What went unfinished and why? What succeeded, what failed? As both an individual and a business owner I start and finish with the positives. I give equal time to crises, mistakes, and loose ends but not more time.

In a previous blog I talked about an over negative press – the year in...

I have been away for several weeks – working hard but in relative isolation. One really interesting thing crept through; Polly Higgins, who I know by e-mail but haven’t met, presented the concept of a Universal Declaration of Planetary Rights. I think this is fascinating concept – it is animate after all – a living planet, so why not?

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is 60 years old and its articles, I think, I hope, are viewed as truths. I believe a society is much less than it could be, should be, when they aren’t truths and when we chip away at them.

But we do chip… chip, chip, chip.

Civilization is defined as:

...

What I love about life is that there is just so much of it, and no knowing all of it. I don’t think I could ever be bored – there is just too much going on and I am almost overwhelmed by the information I have access to through television, the internet, the papers, magazines, just being in London. If I read everything I wanted to there would be no time to do any work! If I traveled everywhere I wanted to go I would never come home!

I also completely understand getting...

I don’t want to pretend that there isn’t a problem. Major financial markets are in trouble – markets were too free, money was way too cheap and here we are.

What we don’t need to hear is the exaggeration of this situation by the press. I just turned a well-known news program off because they decided to introduce the show with ‘Global Meltdown’ scrolling across the bottom of the screen. A global meltdown? Really? Is fire raining from the sky and are houses sinking into the molten earth?
<br...

I had a great night in London this past Wednesday. Fresh Ideas Events launched its first mentoring competition. Several successful entrepreneurial women have agreed to mentor a stranger for the next 6 months and the mentees got a 1-minute taster of what each mentor was like. Attendees will have a week or so to submit applications and will be matched with mentors for what promises to be a tonne of fun.

One thing that absolutely struck me was that the entrepreneurs all had such incredible stage presence. Funny, articulate, individual, enthusiastic... in another life they could be...

I have been under piles of work this week, missing out on all the news of the most recent airline/tour operator to collapse but the full magnitude literally dawned on me this morning. 90,000 passengers stranded, multinational effort to bring them back, and people who didn't buy through a tour group or with a credit card have to pay to 'rescue' themselves.

I think there are two sides to this, the amazing cooperation between airliners to send planes out to bring people back, but also the way that a company can close, so suddenly, with so much...

I have never heard of ‘cold calling’ on anyone’s list of favorite things to do, but I am beginning to think it should be. Cold e-mailing is gradually working its way up the ranks on my list, and in the past few months I can think of nothing but positive examples, some warm calls and some literally hot e-mails.

For years I have been interested in the work of the Santa Monica Baykeeper. One of their projects is the restoration of kelp beds. Sea Kelp not only provides one of the most biodiverse ocean habitats but is also one of...
